One of the highlights of four-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Jeff Gordon’s final NASCAR Sprint Cup season last year was his milestone 93rd career series win at Martinsville, Virginia to advance to the final four in The Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup.

To commemorate that win and Gordon’s 23rd and final full-time season of competition, Canadian Motor Speedway (CMS) is extremely proud to present Gordon’s 2015 # 24 AARP Member Advantages Chevy SS that he raced to victory that day as the center-piece of the CMS display at the 2016 edition of the Motorama Custom Car and Motorsports Expo.

Motorama will be held at Toronto’s International Centre March 11th, 12th and 13th, and Gordon’s Martinsville-winning car at the CMS display will once again be one of the headline attractions. This will be the 6th time CMS has presented Gordon’s # 24 car, but this year marks a very rare and special occasion where one of Gordon’s actual race-winning cars will be on display in Canada.

Continuing a very popular tradition, fans can once again meet and speak with John Bickford Sr. Bickford, who is the stepfather and the man behind the illustrious career of Gordon, the designer of Canadian Motor Speedway.

“I’m looking forward to attending The Motorama Custom Car and Motorsports Expo, and the opportunity to talk with race fans and supporters of CMS,” said Bickford. “It’s something I look forward to every spring. Each year we strive to bring a unique show car to Motorama. This year, we’ll have Jeff’s 93rd win Martinsville car.”

This year, Niagara College‘s Motive Power Program, Applied Research Centre, and The Walker Advanced Manufacturing Innovation Centre will be exhibiting their technology together with CMS, showcasing their Hybrid Trainer and a 3D printed model of Canadian Motor Speedway. Fans will be able to see CMS’s motorsports stadium take shape in 3D form with preliminary specifications from our architects, IBI Group.

Motorama attendees can take their photo with the #24 race car in CMS’s ‘Victory Lane’ and also connect with CMS owners and the management team for the latest progress updates and construction plans for the signature speedway designed by Gordon.

Major Step Forward for CMS Traffic Management Plan

Major Step Forward for Canadian Motor Speedway – Key Stakeholders Provide Full Support & Input to Finalize CMS Traffic Management Plan

Fort Erie, Ontario Another major milestone was reached by the Canadian Motor Speedway’s (CMS) development team this week, as major stakeholders involved in the Traffic Management Plan (TMP) provided their support and final input on the implementation of this unprecedented document.

The goal of the meeting was to move closer to a conclusion of the Ontario Ministry of Transportation’s (MTO) final process to approve the TMP with a final review and consensus by key entities involved in the traffic management process for major events to be held at CMS.  Development of the framework for the TMP consisted of several years of in-depth discussions with specific agencies responsible for traffic, transit, emergency services, border crossings and the QEW corridor which will traverse CMS’s eastern gates.

The Wednesday January 27th meeting, facilitated by The Ontario Ministry of Tourism, Culture & Sport at the 4-Points Sheraton Hotel in St. Catharines included The Ministry of Transportation of The Province of Ontario, The Niagara Region, The Town of Fort Erie, Niagara International Transportation Technology Coalition (NITTEC), Canada Border Services Agency, Department of Homeland Security plus stakeholders related to traffic management on the ground in Niagara including the Ontario Provincial Police, Niagara Regional Police Service and Niagara Emergency Medical Services.

All of the listed organizations will have a role to play at various levels for CMS events, particularly when attendance exceeds 15,000 patrons to ensure a safe and fluid ingress / egress experience for all attendees. The high profile meeting also addressed issues that have historically surfaced at other similar facilities to assess and consider the best methods of management utilizing the latest technology.

All stakeholders have shown tremendous support of the CMS development since initial discussions and the generation of the Traffic Management Plan.

Canadian Motor Speedway Partner and Executive Director, Azhar Mohammad says the meeting was a huge positive step forward for CMS.   “The level of individuals participating in this unprecedented meeting was exceptional. Everyone came with the objective to arrive at a consensus on the Traffic Management Plan. We reviewed the key issues related to the execution of the TMP strategy, and everyone offered solutions that will further refine our TMP. We have committed to incorporate today’s points and issue the finalized plan to complete the TMP approval process in a matter of weeks. We have arrived at a traffic management plan that everyone will spring-board from. It validates the efforts we’ve invested in to date on determining the best practices to effectively manage the traffic component of our facility. We were equally pleased to learn that the MTO has begun its process to replace the Bowen Road interchange which concludes a two year joint evaluation process by CMS and the MTO. “

CMS Chief Executive Officer Ibrahim Abou Taleb offered, “Our success has always been through the integration and consultation with all levels of government.  The assembly validates the interest and support CMS has received from so many agencies that are committed to helping us achieve our objectives – by providing a safe and efficient mobilization plan that has truly captured the experiences of everyone involved in our TMP.”

Tom Kuchyt, Chief Administrative Officer, The Town of Fort Erie was very pleased with the outcome.  “This was a great and very exciting day for The Town of Fort Erie and Canadian Motor Speedway. There are major hurdles in projects of this size. Getting through planning approval stages, getting infrastructure to the site, and certainly traffic management are the three main areas.  We’ve had many meetings with the MTO to discuss the traffic management plan. We’re just now crossing the T’s and dotting the I’s. This was a fabulous group at this meeting. All the stakeholders came together to get a consensus on moving forward, and we’re very close. The MTO, Border Customs, the OPP, The Niagara Region, everybody participated.  I think everybody left this meeting in support of the CMS Traffic Management Plan.”

CMS is now in the process of formal submission of its site plan to The Town of Fort Erie which incorporates the parameters established in the TMP. Approvals are expected over the next few months.

Meanwhile, the orientation of the ¾ mile oval track on the site has been finalized, while 4-time NASCAR champion Jeff Gordon continues to work with CMS architects (IBI Group) on design refinements.

The plan is still on schedule to have permits issued to allow heavy equipment back on the site this summer for major excavation, with opening projected for 2018 barring approval delays.

Major CMS Progress – Bowen Road/QEW Hwy Interchange

Major Progress for Canadian Motor Speedway – MTO Conditionally Approves Bowen Road/QEW Interchange Plan.

Fort Erie, Ontario – After a lengthy and highly detailed process with The Ministry of Transportation of The Province of Ontario (MTO), Canadian Motor Speedway (CMS) has received notice that CMS will not be required to upgrade to a four lane structure and that a two-lane Bowen Road/Queen Elizabeth Highway interchange will be sufficient as long as certain conditions are met.

The conditions require CMS to arrange closure of the Bowen Road interchange at certain traffic thresholds based on the number of attendees to events and traffic queue lengths.  The interchange will remain open to emergency vehicles at all times.  The Region of Niagara and The Town of Fort Erie also have to agree to support the closure parameters, with further agreement by Ontario Provincial Police to provide staff to support the proposed Traffic Management Plan (TMP).

With this decision, CMS now has a clear directive on the highway and road infrastructure required to finalize the TMP and can continue to work with stakeholders to refine the Site Plan for final submission and approval.

Canadian Motor Speedway Partner and Executive Director, Azhar Mohammad says MTO approval for Bowen Road is a major step forward in the CMS time-line.

“This is very positive news for us and another major milestone achieved moving us closer to construction. During the last three years, the Bowen Road interchange issue has been a significant challenge and it was critical for CMS to receive this conditional approval from the MTO.  There are some conditions that need to be met, but our consultants have already prepared most of the responses and we expect to present the final report incorporating a 2 lane interchange format within the next few weeks. We can now focus on the detailed site plan submission and other more challenging infrastructure elements such as water and waste-water. We commend the MTO for their efforts with CMS, our traffic management consultants BA Group, and local emergency services for sharing our priority of developing a safe and effective traffic management plan.”

CMS Chief Executive Officer Ibrahim Abou Taleb welcomed the MTO decision enthusiastically.

“This long awaited response from the MTO is great news despite the extensive and costly process to arrive at this point. As always, we steadfastly believe in the CMS project and its location in Fort Erie and Niagara. This is not only good news for racing fans on both sides of the border, this is a sign and trigger for the future growth of the economy in the Town, the Region and the Province. Our entire CMS team, Town, Region and especially the MTO are to be applauded for this achievement.”

Alan Caslin, Chairman of The Niagara Region knows the MTO decision is an important economic step forward.

“Niagara Regional Council is pleased to see action by the Province on necessary steps to make the CMS project a reality. This significant foreign direct investment will create 750 jobs and is critical to drive new growth in our Regional economy.”

Niagara Regional Council supported the CMS project, including it in The Niagara Gateway Economic Zone and Centre Community Improvement Plan, which enables receipt of over $3 Million in grants and tax incentives.

Sandy Annunziata, Niagara Regional Councillor for Fort Erie, who’s been a tireless supporter of the CMS project since its inception, says the MTO decision is a critical move in the right direction.

“This is an important milestone that is the culmination of an incredible amount of hard work! To our friends at CMS, it confirms they have a partner in the Province. To the residents of Fort Erie and Niagara, it confirms a commitment to helping small communities reach their full economic potential. And to our Foreign Investors, it confirms Ontario is pursuing an agenda that makes investment like this a priority.”

Town of Fort Erie Mayor Wayne Redekop knows maximum effort was needed to secure MTO approval.

“This is extremely good news for all concerned and a relief, I am sure, for the team at CMS.  A great deal of credit goes to Azhar Mohammed and his associates for their persistence, as well as to the staff of the Town of Fort Erie, the Region of Niagara, and their economic development arms.  Now that this major hurdle has been overcome and with a focus on dealing with the servicing requirements for the site, we anxiously anticipate this project moving forward to make the vision a reality.”

“The Bowen Road/QEW interchange will not require upgrading to a four lane structure, a cost that would have been borne by CMS.  This leaves one remaining major hurdle relating to off-site infrastructure required for the development of the site. Efforts can now focus on providing sanitary and water servicing to the property. The Town couldn’t be happier and we would like to thank the MTO, The Region and all stakeholders involved in this outcome.”

It is hoped the next series of permits can be obtained to allow heavy equipment to return to the CMS site next summer to complete the relocation of Miller’s Creek and to begin excavation of the core property for the oval track and grandstands.

Construction completion is projected for third quarter 2017 barring any approval delays.

During the Fort Erie Friendship Festival, the CMS Fort Erie Corporate Office is opened its doors to the public.  Our office is located at 168 Garrison Rd, Suite #1, across from Wendy’s and Tim Horton’s, just up from the Peace Bridge.

The Open House was being held to let residents know that we have an office in Town and gave an opportunity for the public to obtain updates from CMS Management.

ACE Revs Up Presence in The World of Motorsport with CMS

OSHAWA, ON // June 1st, 2015

The Automotive Centre of Excellence (ACE) is launching an industry-changing relationship with The Canadian Motor Speedway (CMS) development in Fort Erie, Ontario with a goal to enhance motorsport in Ontario through specific services and advanced research, with aerodynamic and thermodynamic wind tunnel testing, engine and suspension tuning of race vehicles.

Located in Oshawa, ACE is the first testing and research centre of its kind in the world, owned and operated by The University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT). The $100 million facility, commercially available to customers, is expanding its presence in motorsport.

A memorandum of understanding between ACE and CMS was signed recently at UOIT in Oshawa.

This partnership will assist ACE in claiming a spot in the motorsport industry and ensure ACE is an integral part of motorsport in Ontario, Canada and the United States,” said Don Toporowski, General Manager, ACE. “Through development, research and innovation, this opportunity will strengthen the motorsport community in Ontario.”

Canadian Motor Speedway will be Canada’s largest event stadium and the nation’s first world class integrated oval and road course racing circuit, research, development and entertainment complex.  A key CMS mandate is to promote education, research and improved environmental sustainability in auto racing. CMS views ACE as a natural educational and testing complement to partnerships already in place with McMaster University and Niagara College.

UOIT is an industry leader with their world-class ACE facility and we are proud to be their future track of record.”

ACE will be the official competition wind tunnel of CMS. The agreement will combine ACE Speed Lab services with race/track days at CMS and encourage motorsport research at ACE and CMS. It will also allow UOIT access to CMS research facilities and provide future educational opportunities for UOIT Engineering and Applied Science students.

Niagara Region Waves Green Flag for CMS

Niagara Region Waves Green Flag for Canadian Motor Speedway

Major support for the $400 million dollar Canadian Motor Speedway project in Fort Erie , Ontario became official this week when Niagara Regional Council ratified a recommendation from the Region’s Planning and Development Services Committee to include CMS lands as a strategic location for investment in its Niagara Gateway Economic Zone and Center Community Improvement Plan.

It means CMS is now eligible for tax incentives and development charge reductions .  Estimates of The Region ‘s program represented by incentive options range from $1.4 to $1.8 million annually in tax increment grants over 10 years, plus $1.5 million in development charge reductio ns in the first phase of the CMS project.

The Canadian Motor Speedway project represents the largest Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in Ontario Tourism with $400 million in direct, private sector investment, providing an estimated $430 million in economic impact from development and construction. It will create an estimated 1,100 direct and indirect jobs.

Canadian Motor Speedway Chief Executive Officer Ibrahim Abou Taleb welcomes the commitment from The Niagara Region.

“The ratification of the report today is another great milestone for CMS. As we have stated since the beginning of the project, a world class facility like CMS can only be created with the real support of local government and t he Niagara Region has certainly proved its commitment to the project with the inclusion of CMS in their Gateway Economic initiative, thus triggering crucial investment incentives for us.”

Canadian Motor Speedway Partner and Executive Director Azhar Mohammad s tated that this is real, tangible support for the project and CMS’ financial time-line.

“Today’s vote was significant in the sense that it’s the first time CMS has ever received measurable and material support from the Niagara Region during the last 8 years. The Region clearly understands the tremendous positive impact CMS will have for its residents and has made the right decision in investing in our collective futures. We congratulate Chairman Caslin and his team for standing with us. It is our hope the Province follows the Region and T own s lead with support for offsite infrastructure.”

Niagara Regional Council Chairman Alan Caslin believes the vote to include CMS in The Gateway Economic Zone demonstrates The Region’s new commitment to economic prosperity.

“This partnership and investment shows that we are serious about positioning Niagara globally and demonstrates our commitment to a number of Council’s strategic priorities. What we’re talking about has major positive benefits for Niagara’s future – it’s hard to imagine another project where we would be able to see such a high and immediate return on our investment.”

Fort Erie Regional Councillor Sandy Annunziata, who put forth the original recommendation to The Town, and The Region, stated that Gateway inclusion will help CMS move forward. He wants the Province of Ontario to get on board.

“Absolutely! What we have to have are tangible metrics. The Town has provided it, The Region has provided it, and I think it’s owed to CMS after 8 years of being this patient. They need a commitment from the Provincial and Federal levels of government to fund the off-site costs that should not be borne by the investor and developer. We also have some work to do to educate parties outside Niagara. We have to take the messa g e to Toronto, to Queen`s Park and Bay Street. These aren`t grants, these aren`t giveaways. This is contingent on a $400 million investment and I think it`s incumbent on the Province and the Federal government to do their part to make sure we secure this investment.“

Fort Erie Mayor Wayne Redekop offers the new deal with the Region is a giant step forward for CMS and the Town.

“This project rings all the bells with respect to economic growth and prosperity for our community. We put in our application several months ago to extend water and sewer to the property which also has a side benefit for the municipality to create other lands that can be utilized for employment, industrial lands, etc. There’s no reason why the Province shouldn`t be moving this forward. To me it’s a no brainer. We’re talking about $400 million in investment, hundreds of jobs, $430 million annually in economic impact in Niagara. If the Province has a growth and prosperity agenda, and I know they do, what’s the problem? They should be getting on board supporting this wholeheartedly, moving the project forward for approval and do whatever they can to welcome CMS to Ontario.”

   CARBON NEUTRAL SPEEDWAY

Since the inception of the Canadian Motor Speedway development, we have instilled a relentless mandate for our engineers to ensure the design and operation of our facility will be Carbon Neutral. Jeff Gordon has been a champion in the industry to promote environmentally friendly initiatives and this is a fundamental component with respect to how he envisions CMS as the World’s First Carbon Neutral Speedway. It’s a responsibility we take very seriously as motor sports transitions into a greener future.

CMS will achieve its carbon neutral status by offsetting the carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere from racing, through the utilization of renewable technology used for power, heating, cooling and leading edge waste management techniques that will create a greater amount of useful energy which does not produce any carbon dioxide. Our environmental enhancements on the site as well as best forestry practices will further promote the production of cleaner air for future generations. Carbon neutrality is not a simple tagline for us, it’s how we will race and operate our facility responsibly.

NATURAL AREAS

The Canadian Motor Speedway development covers 823 acres in Fort Erie near Lake Erie and the Niagara River. 328 of those acres will be unpaved parking lots and camping areas. 289 acres are naturally environmentally protected areas. That means 75% of the property will be green…and that does not include the floral displays and landscaping around the speedway, road course and ancillary buildings.

The relocation and redevelopment of Miller Creek Phase 1 was completed in the Fall of 2013. On the west side of the QEW highway, Miller Creek often dried out and once connected as part of Phase 2, will be able to hold water year round, host wildlife habitats and become a natural backdrop to the 65,000 seat grandstands. The banks of the creek will now be 60 metres wide and you can see the amphibian ponds already carved out. We are looking forward to seeding the creek-bed, planting trees and joining up the Creek.

Did you know that the official tree of Fort Erie is the Tulip Tree? Other native trees are Red Maple, Flowering Dogwood, Eastern Hemlock, White Spruce and the Eastern White Pine. The wooded lots will be protected and eco trails will connect natural features through the use of pedestrian & bike trails.

DESIGN & CONSTRUCTION

Other Carbon Neutral initiatives that are being considered in the design and construction phases include geothermal power generation, geothermal heating & cooling, solar power, waste to energy and possibly the recycling of grey water. Not only will these sustainable technologies reduce our carbon footprint, but they will save money and increase efficiency.

Geothermal energy is energy produced from the heat of the Earth. It can be produced naturally and efficiently and is extremely clean and sustainable. Geothermal energy can be used in both summer and winter months – which is important in Ontario where we enjoy temperatures at both extreme ends of the thermometer.

A 5-acre solar power field powers the entire Pocono Raceway and about 250 homes in the area. We will also be looking into solar power options at CMS.

Many of these initiatives will link nicely to our educational partners who will either assist in the operation or be able to come and learn about these sustainable systems. We plan on leaving portions of these and other systems open and on display for elementary, high school and post secondary student groups to come in and learn about sustainability on site.

The selection process for materials used in the construction of CMS will take into consideration the long term environmental implications and sustainability. For example, LED lighting around the track and entire facility will not only save money after the initial investment, but the lighting is designed to be glare free to oncoming drivers and minimally visible/distracting when viewed from the rear. LED Light bars will also notify drivers, teams and fans in the stands when there is a caution or a Red flag on the track. Other construction materials can save on energy costs such as 3M window films and other vinyl solutions for design and décor.

Utilizing local contractors for construction when possible will also save on transportation costs and emissions. We look forward to working with Walker Industries, who operate quarries across the street, instead of hauling aggregate from Northern Canada.

Part of our detailed Traffic Management Plan includes shuttle bus depots, charter bus parking and solar-powered golf carts for shuttling fans. This will reduce traffic and fuel consumption on highways and reduce travel times.

RECYCLING

Recycling programs as part of our guest and event operations will include bottles, cans, paper, plastic, glass and metal. Beverage partners will be leaders in our programs and have already shown their commitment to recycling at stadiums and racetracks.

Through a composting program, our organics can be turned into compost and used in our flower and vegetable gardens. We look forward to developing this organic recycling program with our educational partners in the agriculture, horticulture & culinary fields. Niagara College chefs from the Canadian Food & Wine Institute are familiar with vertical farming and selecting fresh ingredients to plant and use in their recipes which can be created and enjoyed at CMS.

Other post-secondary programs can coordinate with CMS regarding recycling beyond plastic and paper. The recycling of grey water and converting waste to energy are two recycling initiatives that we will be exploring. If these systems are put into place, we will leave portions of them open for education, school groups, tours and training so that CMS benchmark achievements in sustainability can be passed on to other developments.

Not only will CMS recycle materials consumed on site, but we have a list of Community Events that will allow residents to bring items to CMS to be recycled as part of awareness campaigns and fundraisers. Schools or organizations can promote awareness and even raise money by hosting a recycling event at CMS. Whether it’s tires, batteries or electronics, we look forward to linking community and corporate partners while recycling materials for a good cause at CMS.

Another wonderful organization is Habitat for Humanity that uses its’ re-stores to recycle household furniture and building supplies. Any homes that are being removed from the property in order to build the speedway will have items donated to the Habitat for Humanity re-stores. Once we are open, we have a few more ideas of how to partner with Habitat for Humanity.

Recycling programs as part of the on-track content at CMS will be included in the design requirements for equipment and infrastructure. Companies involved in the automotive industry whether it be the manufacturers or race teams and series want to be a good partner with the earth and are involved with programs that see that racing oils and tires are recycled. Environmental services companies provide oil recycling and re-refining services, ensuring that all oil and lubricants used in racing are recaptured and re-used. Race tires are collected and processed into a recycled material that can be sold to various industries for next-generation usage such as power generation, asphalt mixtures and compounds for playground mulch, roof shingles and flooring.

Even the race cars are recycled by race teams. Parts are reused or re-engineered, materials are recycled and race cars with outdated technology at the top series are often sold to other racing series.

A major focus of the CMS development is R&D, innovation, education and developing sustainable technologies that will improve motorsports, the automotive industry and everyday life in general.   Even before the 21 acre R&D Centre is built, in the first core speedway phase of CMS, schools and companies can use the Speedway Club for seminars and conferences, the corporate suites as classrooms, the garages as labs and of course testing on the tracks.

The potential to have research projects at CMS brings a post-secondary element to the Town of Fort Erie and the opportunity to develop on existing sustainable technologies and potentially create next-generation life changing technologies. Research projects that have been brought to our attention already include developing electric/solar/hybrid powered vehicles and charging stations, converting garbage into plastic, converting plastic to oil, converting a seed/grain/fibre into plastic, converting switch grass into bio-fuel.

Where does these innovations go?…To manufacturers and eventually to the consumer. CMS will work with our education and manufacturers to develop and produce commercially sustainable technologies. Some of the innovation may cross the road to have components manufactured and assembled on the 10 acres of CMS lands that are already zoned for light manufacturing.

Automotive manufacturers can utilize the track for testing year round with new technologies. CMS will also host automotive manufacturer new vehicle launches, commercials and photo-shoots for vehicles and components. For example, winter tires can be tested in winter conditions and marketing campaigns can be filmed and launched at CMS. Winter driving schools can also take place at CMS.

School groups can tour CMS to look at the facility, learn about how it operates on and off the track with automotive technology and sustainability systems (solar, geothermal, recycling). CMS will host mega-mileage challenges where high school, college and university teams build eco-cars, test and race them and the winner is not only the fastest, but the most efficient using sustainable technologies.

Our education partners can also develop programs to train, upgrade and re-train mechanics with their own automotive business whether it be garages or roadside assistance. The automotive industry is changing rapidly with hybrid and electric powered vehicles. CMS can host the R&D, the education, the training and testing for new technology. The Research & Development that will occur on site will assist in developing green technology and allow for educations for all ages at CMS, inside and outside of the automotive industry.

MOTORSPORTS & SUSTAINABILITY

Many automotive innovations are developed for racing to improve speed and efficiency. Sometimes the racing industry takes technology– electric cars, fuels, etc and pushes them to limits to test and drive performance. These improvements eventually go back to the showroom at your local dealer.

Racing series are striving to have a responsible sustainability platform whether that includes the track facility infrastructure, recycling programs for consumables, tires or racing oil or the technology used in racing series. Ethanol fuel for racing is made from corn and considered a renewable energy resource.

The Formula E electric car racing series is in its’ first season in 2014-2015 with 10 races around the world. CMS will not sanctioned by any racing series until we are closer to construction be completed, but we can say that this is a series we are watching, especially there isn’t a Canadian race on the schedule yet.

There is a new partner starting to be seen on some racecar decals and CMS will be looking into the association for a future relationship as well.   The Green Sports Alliance leverages ‘the cultural and market influence of sports to promote healthy, sustainable communities where we live and play’. They do this by ‘inspiring sports leagues, teams, venues, partners and millions of fans to embrace renewable energy, healthy food, recycling, water efficiency, species preservation, safer chemicals and other environmentally preferable practices. Green Sports Alliance members represent nearly 300 sports teams and venues from 20 different sports leagues and 14 countries.’

TORONTO, ON // FEBRUARY 19, 2015 • Four-time NASCAR Sprint Cup champion Jeff Gordon recently announced that 2015 will be his 23rd and final full-time season of competition. Gordon’s historic decision makes this year’s appearance of his 2015 #24 3M Chevy SS in the Canadian Motor Speedway display at the upcoming Motorama Custom Car & Motorsports Expo, something extra special.

2015 No 24 3M Chevy SS C_edited-1Motorama takes place March 13, 14 & 15 at Toronto’s International Centre. Gordon’s legendary #24 NASCAR Sprint Cup car, in the CMS display, will be one of the show’s centerpiece attractions.

This will mark the fifth time that CMS will present the #24 car at the show, and the first time the team’s new 3M Chevy SS paint scheme will be shown in Canada. Fans can get a close-up look and take photos with the car that Gordon will pilot – with 3M as the primary sponsor – in 11 races in his final, full-time NASCAR Sprint Cup championship campaign.

Continuing a tradition at the show, fans will once again have an opportunity to meet and speak with John Bickford Sr., Vice President and General Manager of Jeff Gordon, Inc., at the CMS display. Bickford is Gordon’s stepfather and has played a significant role in the driver’s illustrious career. In addition to being a four-time Cup Series champ, Jeff Gordon is the designer of Canadian Motor Speedway.

“I am very much looking forward to being at the show again this year,” said Bickford. “We have used the Motorama / Expo weekend to show off new paint schemes three out of the last five years. This will be the first time fans anywhere will be able to get real close to this new 3M car. Our Canadian fan base is pretty special to everybody. It’s a very prideful thing to be able to come to Canada, shake everybody’s hand, make friends, lots of fun things going on. I look forward to it every year and the fact I can retire my extreme cold weather jacket now because I’m coming in March. I know you’re going to have great weather for me instead of eight inches of snow and record cold in Toronto!”

Bickford reaffirms Gordon’s excitement and commitment to the Canadian Motor Speedway project.

“Jeff has very precise and intimate ideas on how he wants the CMS oval designed and built,” Bickford continued. “The system he’s using to put together the numbers for the architects ensures side-by-side racing with lots of passing. He’s working diligently at that. We’re just looking for that opportunity for the next step, and I’m sure we’ll be able to share a lot of those times and dates with fans at the show in March.

“Right now, the team is working on a couple of small details, but I suspect we’re going to have ink to paper as it relates to shapes, styles, the radius of the corners, banking degrees, transitions from banking to straightaways, all those finite details from Jeff all coming together over the next few months, giving us the opportunity to show the fans what Canadian Motor Speedway is going to look and feel like.”

ABOUT JOHN BICKFORD SR.: John Bickford is Vice President and General Manager of Jeff Gordon, Inc. Stepfather to NASCAR driver Jeff Gordon, Bickford started Gordon’s racing career on a makeshift race track in Vallejo, California in 1976 when Jeff was only 5. At the same time, Bickford started MPD, which is a company that produces products for physically challenged people to enable them to drive cars without the use of their feet. The company also produces race car products. In 1985, he moved east to further Jeff Gordon’s racing, establishing a base in Pittsboro, Indiana. CMS OPENS CORPORATE OFFICE IN FORT ERIE


Canadian Motor Speedway investors continue to make significant progress in discussions with Ontario Provincial Ministries to clear final site plan conditions for Canada’s first world class oval speedway designed by racing legend Jeff Gordon. Additional unique features built into the design include a fully integrated road course, R&D innovation park and major entertainment complex.

As part of the developers’ ongoing commitment to its community, CMS is proud to announce the opening of a corporate office in The Town of Fort Erie, Ontario.

The new office, located at 168 Garrison Road, with its distinctive auto racing theme and decor, will provide CMS management and staff with a primary meeting place to conduct Speedway business as well as to oversee the next phase of engineering and construction work targeted for the Spring of 2015.

The opening of the CMS Corporate office is an emotional moment for Town of Fort Erie Mayor Doug Martin. “There were times when we wondered if this was really going to happen. With all the challenges that we’ve had, and the road blocks we ran into, to see this actually happening is really great. This is my last week on council as Mayor, so to get this done before I leave office is very special. This is a definite signal to the Town that this is real, we are going forward. Stop asking the questions! Get behind us as we’re ready to go!  We’ve started to move some dirt and we’re going to be open in 2017.”


The stone has been cast and the subsequent rippled effect will be felt throughout the community. This is a game changer for Fort Erie and all of Niagara,”   stated Fort Erie Chamber of Commerce President Rick Phibbs.

 

Seeing a CMS physical presence means a lot to everybody,” commented Jim Thibert, General Manager, Fort Erie Economic Development and Tourism Corporation. “We have always worked with Azhar, he’s a when it happens kind of guy. But we have to bridge this difference of government attitude Vs the private sector.  WHEN it happens instead of IF it happens. Hopefully with this new CMS physical presence, and the people talking about it, we will start to build that bridge,” Thibert continued.


The Chairman of The Council of The Regional Municipality of Niagara, Gary Burroughs said, “This is the first physical piece of a seven year drive for Canadian Motor Speedway and for all of us in the Niagara Region.  It’s a huge step forward. It’s something we can identify saying yes, it’s going to happen. We will be participating as advocates at the Regional level for Fort Erie and for CMS “.
